Josephine Brady
In March 1915, the British newspaper Hull Daily Mail ran the headline: “A Miner Dressed as a Woman”. Frederick Brady was charged in Blyth with repeatedly appearing “in female attire for unlawful purposes”. According to witnesses, Brady had approached soldiers in the street while dressed in this clothing. At the time of arrest, Brady gave the name Josephine and was wearing “full, fashionable women’s clothing” and make-up. The court treated the case as serious and sentenced Brady to three months’ hard labour.
