Discussion: Comeback of the Schneeberg?

With raw materials becoming increasingly scarce and being used as instruments of political pressure, the European Union is taking a closer look at former deposits and their potential. The question is what resources might once again be made available in times of global political crisis. Schneeberg, too, is coming back into focus.

What would this mean in concrete terms for the Passeier Valley and the former mining district, for local communities and the environment? Could mining realistically resume under today’s technical, environmental and social conditions? And what impact would such a scenario have on the landscape, the environment, the economy and the quality of life in the region?

The discussion will examine the historical background, current political and economic developments, and possible future scenarios. Together, we will consider the opportunities, risks and limits of renewed mining at Schneeberg and bring different perspectives into the debate.
